John Cena Partners with Neutrogena to Champion Sun Safety
John Cena has teamed up with Neutrogena for their "Sunscreen You Can’t See" campaign, promoting the Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 70. In collaboration with dermatologist Dr. Neera Nathan, Cena highlights the importance of sun protection, drawing from his personal experience with skin cancer.
Reflecting on his wake-up call, Cena shared with People Magazine how a routine dermatologist visit led to the removal of a cancerous spot from his right pec. “You gotta come back in,” he recalled the unsettling follow-up call that made him take sun protection seriously.
Growing up, sunscreen wasn’t a priority for Cena. “Never,” he admitted when asked if he used it as a kid. Raised by a hardworking mother caring for five boys, he understands why sun safety wasn’t top of mind. "Being born in ’77, this was kind of all new knowledge," he explained.
A year after his first procedure, Cena had another cancerous spot removed near his right shoulder. “If you watch WWE, you’ll be able to see them,” he said, referencing the visible marks left behind. Despite his usual optimism, he confessed that the experience was nerve-wracking. “My mind always goes to the worst-case scenario,” he admitted, crediting his dermatologist for helping him navigate the situation.
Now, Cena hopes to use his platform to encourage others to take sun protection seriously. “I’m very fortunate to hopefully be a mouthpiece to get people to use sunscreen,” he said.
Neutrogena’s campaign cleverly incorporates Cena’s iconic "You Can’t See Me" catchphrase, something he embraced wholeheartedly. “They were like, ‘Hey, would you mind leaning into the joke?’ And I’m like, ‘Would I?!’ I’m already doing it anyway!” Cena said, praising the campaign’s humor and message.
His advice is simple: “Just get out of your own way.” He compares wearing sunscreen to brushing your teeth— a small habit with long-term benefits. “We all love to enjoy a sunny day. Just take that one extra step, brush your teeth, put on some Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, and you’ll get a lot more days of doing that.”
